Siepi 2020 75 cl Marchesi Mazzei
Marchesi Mazzei"One of the 50 wines that changed Italy" (Gambero Rosso).
The "Siepi" vineyard has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1435 and is expressly mentioned in an accounting document of the properties of Madonna Esmeralda Mazzei. Although historically part of the Castello di Fonterutoli estate, it has always been managed as a separate farm.
Siepi, before being wine, is a place, a 6-hectare vineyard surrounded by thick oak woods: a real "island" characterized by ideal altitudes and an exceptional, mild and pseudo-Mediterranean microclimate.
In the early 1980s Lapo Mazzei sensed the potential of this vineyard, realizing that here Sangiovese and Merlot would not only complement each other, but could express themselves "with one voice", with elegance and persistence.
The Siepi Mazzei wine, 50% Sangiovese and 50% Merlot, ages for 18 months in small 225 liter French oak barrels.
The Sangiovese gives concentration and complexity to the wine, together with a good acidity which allows a long ageing. Merlot is the perfect complement to Sangiovese to which it provides opulence, softness and color.
Siepi is a red wine whose thickness and concentration make it a wine with a unique and original temperament. Crunchy notes of elderberry, plums, berries, sandalwood, tobacco, decidedly long, defined and clear finish.
